GAINING SPIRITUAL HEALTH

Everyone wants to be healthy. Everyone desires to walk in good health and feel good. However, spiritual health should be our top priority.

.

It is readily available. Spiritual health is God’s promise to us. He revealed to the world multiple centuries ago what it is and how to acquire it. In fact, in the very beginning, spiritual health was the norm.

THE BOOK OF GENESIS

First of all, we know that God is good. He is perfect. He can be trusted to the nth degree. Therefore, anything that God creates is good and anything God creates to sustain life, including food, is good.

In the Genesis account, at the beginning of Life on Earth just after the Days of Creation were completed, everything God had created was pronounced good. This included the good health in general of all living creatures but also the spiritual health of humanity. Yet God created only one life form akin to Himself:

God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them… [Genesis 1:27-28]

By this we see that not only is God good but the first people God created were good. He had blessed them abundantly with every form of good health. He had provided for them everything they could possibly need or want. They were living in a good place. Life was good.

As you read the following familiar passage from Genesis Chapter 1, see if you can find any hidden details in the narrative one might otherwise pass over. See if you can ascertain clear facts pertaining to spiritual health and good health in general. The foundational basics are all there. Let’s take a look:

27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; 30 and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. 31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. [Genesis 1:27-31]

According to this ancient narrative, whatever living creature God creates is not only good but God created the beginning and consequent perpetual process that allows for such living creatures to birth new generations. He also created the means required to sustain such living creatures, that is, how each must be nourished and gain the proper nutrients for good health and ongoing life. All of these were good.

In reading Genesis 1, then, we discover that at the end of each Day of Creation, God deemed everything He created on each day as good. The Hebrew word is טוֹב ṭôḇ (tobe). I suggest your own research to discover the full description of this word but Strong’s defines it as: Beautiful, best, better, bountiful, cheerful, at ease, × fair (word), (be in) favour, fine, glad, graciously, joyful, kindly, kindness, liketh (best), loving, merry, × most, pleasant, pleaseth, pleasure, precious, prosperity, ready, sweet, wealth, welfare, (be) well(-favoured).

You get the idea. Regarding such Creation days and specific life forms and living creatures, on the Third Day of Creation God created the Plant Kingdom. On Day Five He created Part 1 of the Animal Kingdom (the creatures of the air and water, primarily birds and fish). On Day Six, the final day of His active work, God created Part 2 of the Animal Kingdom, the land creatures, that which may be termed advanced life. These land animals are listed in three categories: (1) cattle, (2) creeping things, and (3) beasts of the earth. The original Hebrew equivalent of these three are bᵊhēmâ (be-hay-maw’), remeś (reh’-mes), and ḥay ‘ereṣ (khah’-ee) (eh’-rets).

The following brief Strong’s definitions gives us a better idea of these three primary life forms:

(1) בְּהֵמָה bᵉhêmâh (be-hay-maw’); from an unused root (probably meaning to be mute); properly, a dumb beast; especially any large quadruped or animal (often collective):—beast, cattle.

(2) רֶמֶשׂ remes (reh’-mes); from H7430; a reptile or any other rapidly moving animal:—that creepeth, creeping (moving) thing.

(3a) חַי chay (khah’-ee); from H2421; alive; also (as noun, especially in the feminine singular and masculine plural) life (or living thing), whether literally or figuratively:— age, alive, appetite, (wild) beast, company, congregation, life(-time), live(-ly), living (creature, thing), maintenance, merry, multitude, (be) old, quick, raw, running, springing, troop.

(3b) אֶרֶץ ʼerets (eh’-rets); from an unused root probably meaning to be firm; the earth (at large, or partitively a land):—× common, country, earth, field, ground, land, × nations, way, + wilderness, world.

One of the common characteristics of all of these land animals was their food: They were apparently all herbivores—plant eaters. This included the birds:

29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; 30 and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. [Genesis 1:29-30] [1]

The first thing which may come to mind here is this: What about the carnivores? Why does the Genesis account apparently either not list meat-eating predators or makes the apparent claim that such predators were actually herbivores at that long distant early time before the fall of man?

This opens up a big box of questions, to say the least, but I will try to stay on point here. Remember, the author of Genesis, as God’s spokesman, was primarily referencing the grocery list of early humans in that God had originally made human beings to subsist on a diet of “every plant yielding seed,” the fruit of “every tree which has fruit yielding seed,” and by extension, “every green plant.”

Now, it is also a fact that the majority of quadruped mammals such as cattle and deer are herbivores. Most birds of the present are not strict herbivores but the majority of their diet is plant-based. Some mammals and most birds are omnivores in that they eat both plant and animal matter. Some birds are carnivorous predators. Scientific studies have shown that animal diets in general have changed over time and location and that the normal process of such change, when it occurs, goes from herbivore to omnivore and in some instances to carnivore.[2] Of course, natural herbivores and carnivores are quite different in physiognomy regarding their teeth and digestive abilities which obviously portends original creation.

Again, I don’t want to get off point here, but this section of Genesis, while it never mentions it, also brings up the topical discussion of animal death. Some believe there was no death whatsoever on the planet before the fall of man. Others explain that there must have been death as part of God’s original creation or the land would eventually be overrun with far too many animals which it could not possibly support. Death would therefore require predators to keep nature in the proper balance. Death would also require carrion eaters.

But back to our topic. The Genesis account is clear that mankind was originally created to be strict herbivores (no meat or dairy). Our bodies are constructed in such a way to back this up. We have the teeth for it. In fact, the Garden of Eden was actually primarily a fruit tree orchard. Human health, then, depends on proper human diet and if we were originally created to eat only fruits, vegetables (including leafy greens), grains, and nuts (and possibly roots) then a diet of that sort would appear to be far healthier than one that introduces foreign matter not suitable for human biology and digestion.

Sadly, much of our food supply and subsequent diet at present consists mostly of “foreign matter” in that it is predominantly non-organic, factory processed, and chemical-laden/saturated. This makes the very food we need to survive the likely leading cause of disease and general ill health whether people know it or not (or care).

What does this have to do with spiritual health? I’m getting to it. Stay tuned for Part 2.

  1. Thank you, RJ. It will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the sheet let down to Peter from heaven in Acts 10:11. It is so important to not cause others to stumble, as the Apostle Paul wrote, mostly regarding Biblical times dietary laws and food, (Romans 14:2-23) yet in faith it is also invaluable to remember, “In everything give thanks, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thess. 5:18) Food should not rule us nor should it affect us so as to ultimately divide us. Unfortunately, I have Christian as well as unbelieving friends who either have health issues that restricts their diets or they are simply so idolatrous with eating and weight and diet that they seldom visit, eat out or enjoy a meal with others — I find this hugely sad, even…faithless. I think of how the children of Israel even began complaining about manna in the wilderness. If we are too earthly minded, seems we become our own worst enemies. God wants us to enjoy life in moderate ways, to walk humbly with Him, and to give thanks to Him for all He’s provided, and in everything.

    • Thanks Susan. I appreciate the comment and I agree. Well thought-out. We must always be thankful for God’s providence and understand that the Lord is for us! You bring up many interesting topics here that veteran Christians have hashed out for years and it pleases me to have a reader friend who is so informed and aware of such topics. Aren’t Bible studies fun?

I hope you don’t mind me addressing these points you make somewhat in-depth. I will certainly try to be brief and save what I must for this series. Regarding that passage in Acts, it is quite telling. Rather than Peter and the guys being perceived by the religious authorities as “ignorant and unlearned” we see that they were actually quite astute and good obedient followers of the OT (the only Scriptures of the time). Like all Israelites who truly honored God they were well aware of the dietary laws of Leviticus. Those laws were absolutely vital to good long-lasting health and prove that God cared greatly about the overall health of His people and treated them very well. He revealed all they would need to live by in the Word of God (Torah, Prophets, and Writings). No other nation had such all-encompassing excellent information.

The point the Lord was making when He gave this vision to Peter was, of course, not saying that we are allowed to eat any junk we want and to fear no consequence thereof, but that Gentiles were generally perceived by Israelites as inferior morons incapable of the intelligence and good sense they themselves possessed. This means the majority of Israelites actually saw Gentiles (the hated “goy”) as “all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air.” They even referred to the goy as mere “cattle.” Now, all the creatures Peter saw in this vision were on the Book of Leviticus do-not-eat list. They were the never-eat four-footed animals, reptiles (crawling creatures), and unhealthy birds. We know this by Peter’s reaction. Therefore, the Lord was merely using such do-not-eat creatures in the vision because that’s exactly how Israelites perceived Gentiles (all non-Israelites the world over). Their perception could not be more wrong. One may wonder how such people attained this discriminatory outlook. Some of them became filled with hateful prejudice and developed an attitude of arrogant superiority. The Lord Jesus could simply never work through such people to bring salvation to the Gentile world.

It was thus an ongoing challenge to work through even His own followers (His Community consisted of only Israelites to that point in history) because so much of their religious indoctrination had to be overcome and “untaught.” Peter was caught between a rock and a hard place and solved it by simply obeying and trusting the Lord which is always the best course of action in such instances. It was obviously very good that Peter knew His Lord’s voice very well.

Regarding diet, for optimum health, the best course of action is to obey the Law of God as set down in Leviticus. He put it there for a very good reason. Yet, we often cannot achieve the very best in diet due to unavailability or insufficient funds so we strive to do the best we can. The Lord understands this, of course, but I believe He wants us to strive nonetheless to do our best.

The big difference, in my opinion, is when diet becomes religious. One should not strive to eat well for religious reasons or get religious about it, which is what many excellent diet purveyors do. In other words, a diet consisting of junk food and garbage could certainly be willful sin but that doesn’t mean God will necessarily send everyone to hell for violating His dietary laws. One should only attempt to eat right for the sake of their optimum health and all the benefits it provides. Even if one only succeeds at this partially he or she will gain partial improvement and will notice the difference. It is an issue, I think, that is essentially about the condition of one’s heart. Those who truly have a heart for the Lord Jesus want to honor and obey Him and not major on finding loopholes to circumvent the intention of His holy Word.

This is what the Pharisees etc. did by creating an “Oral Law” that circumvented the true Law of Moses, “And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition” (See Matthew 15). Sadly, many Christians do exactly the same thing with the New Covenant Scriptures.

Thanks again, Susan, for an excellent comment. Blessings

      • Good insights, and thank you for sharing a lot of info on this, RJ…but still wondering why the Lord said of the creatures in the sheet, “Kill and eat?” I am not quite clear on this passage but I’m thinking God is saying that all things are acceptable (if not kosher) when received by faith and with thanksgiving and prayer. I see this as part of the New Covenant promise and that this is what Paul is perhaps getting at in Romans 14.

        • I think we must start by attempting to make such NT passages dovetail with the OT. We know the Lord Jesus never violated the Torah though He was often accused of such. We know He actually fulfilled the Law. He stood up for it and said not the smallest part would pass away, meaning it is eternal. This is how we know to address issues not specifically addressed in the NT though addressed in the Torah.

Regarding diet, it is obviously better to eat whatever we can afford or is available rather than starve and die. In those instances we pray and ask the Lord’s blessings as always. Paul was spending much of his time ministering to Gentiles who had no knowledge or understanding of the good diet presented in the Law of Moses. He had to make allowances for non-kosher food and taught on this. But this does not mean that God was wrong about Leviticus or had changed His mind or that it had been done away with.

Regarding Peter, the Lord was trying to get him to overcome his refusal to believe that Gentiles could be saved. No one in the Jerusalem Community believed that at that time. Gentiles could become Israelite proselytes but would have to jump through many religious hoops to do so. In fact, Cornelius was such a proselyte in the making. But rather than become merely another religious proselyte to the inferior and wrongheaded Israelite religion of that time, the Lord Jesus wanted to fill him with the Holy Spirit! The Lord wanted this otherwise hated Gentile to join up with His Community rather than get sucked into religion. Cornelius obviously had a heart for God and wanted to give himself wholesale to God. The Lord Jesus knew this, of course, and created an opportunity for Cornelius and his household to have their own Pentecost. This is exactly what ended up happening.

Before this could happen, however, Peter had to be convinced and it is in part why he was given the vision. Again, Peter opposed any Gentiles getting what they got and thought this was what the Lord wanted. He was wrong on this issue as was the Jerusalem Community including James and the other apostles. That’s how new that issue was at that time. They just didn’t understand.

But Peter obeyed. It is what we all must do when we don’t necessarily understand. (Acts Chapter 10 is an excellent account of how the Lord was overcoming religious prejudice and taking Pentecost to the nations.) Peter obeyed and went to see Cornelius and then the following happened. It shocked Peter to no end:

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?” And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days. [Acts 10:44-48]

  3. Interesting article brother and love the comments as well. With food being so processed that good things are being weaned out of food anymore it’s important to consider how we eat before the Lord. I read a recent article stating there are more Americans dying 65 years and younger per capita than anywhere else in the world. Think about that for a moment. I think it would have to do with American food, prescription and non-prescription drugs along with overall lifestyle. Notwithstanding following Christ or not.

    • Thanks Al. Much appreciation. Excellent comment. Regarding the essence of our topic, one can apply such simple but brilliant and wise sayings of the Lord such as: “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” [Luke 16:13]

I bring this up because the entire food question is answered by it. Massive amounts of money (trillions) over the last one hundred plus years has gone into the manufacture of GMO processed chemical-laden/saturated food in America for only one ultimate reason: Monetary profit. In other words, if one was truly altruistic with a desire to help others he would create, allow for, and distribute only the best organic food. Imagine the Lord Jesus, then, multiplying junk food instead of multiplying the pure organic food that He did.

Pure organic food is best but the movers and shakers are not interested in the health of the people but only the money they can extract from them. Food manufacture is thus for the most part a strictly for-profit business. It is the same in the medical field. It is purely for-profit only. If there was no monetary incentive such industries would not exist and the food and medical fields would be staffed only by those who are truly interested in the health of the people and would do it all in as much of an affordable way as possible just as the Lord did (He actually ministered for free). This was the way it used to be before Big Pharma took over. Also, it is not difficult to see the connection between disease and illness-causing quasi-food (the great majority available to the masses) and the medical/pharmaceutical industry. The latter profits from the former.

This paradigm of serving God or wealth can obviously be applied ubiquitously. The NT term “wealth” is from the Greek word μαμωνᾶς mamōnas (mam-mo-nas’). It is defined as “wealth personified” and “treasure/riches where it is personified and opposed to God.” It denotes the deity of riches and wealth. Therefore, the Lord was not simply referring to money but to a particular deity associated with and ruling over wealth/treasure/riches/money and the acquisition of such. Those who thus choose money over the Lord are actually opposing the Lord Jesus and choosing the devil. Instead of putting the Lord Jesus first and serving Him they choose to serve the devil by putting money first.

The only way one can withstand, not be affected by, and resist the temptation, fear, brainwashing, and deception associated with putting the acquisition of wealth first and foremost over God is to put the Lord Jesus first in all things. It is simply a matter of placing oneself fully under His authority. Then, His presiding authority will rule over everything else in one’s life and all else will be subject to Him.

In this series on gaining spiritual health I will be discussing these points further. Thanks again Al. Hope all is well and blessings to you.

  4. The first 5 books in the Bible are my go to reads, especially Genesis. It refreshes my spirit and brings me home to Him as it is a reminder of how we came to be where we are now. There was a beginning and there will be an end. I have to say, for myself, I have never felt more alive, energetic and strong since my spiritual health has come first. In the past I got caught up in the advertisements of what man said was good for us, what foods we should eat and how healthy they are for us. Things that are primarily made in a factory. Unaware of all the chemicals and pesticides used to produce so called food. They made the ads look so convincing. I find it so refreshing to be able to make my own bread these days, make food for my husband and I from scratch the best that I can. Gardening is amazing to me, to grow food and then prepare it for a meal without going to a store. Just to know that He created everything we need to sustain ourselves is a true wonderment. I fear for the younger generation who seem to be missing out on this, with fast foods, and food deliveries of anything they want without the enjoyment of preparation, they are missing out on so much. They are missing out on how to give thanks for what is in front of them. We have friends that will not touch pork at all because it is referred to as unclean. What do you think of the passage in Leviticus about the split hooves? Is there a second meaning to this passage?

    • Thanks Sandra. Great comment. I’m glad for all the progress you have made regarding diet. We all must come to the same place in life at some point. You are now living it out having seen the other side of things and are reaping the great benefits (homemade bread with purely organic ingredients is great).

I began getting into the better food issue when I was just a young man many years ago. The first book I remember buying on the subject was called Eating For Life (1973) which I bought in the early 1970s. I was serious enough to become a vegetarian briefly. From there I continued branching out and doing continual research and applying what I discovered. When I was born again in 1976 and gave my life to the Lord Jesus I immediately began reading His Word. I couldn’t get enough. I read the entire Bible in a relatively short time. I say all this because it is when I discovered the dietary laws in the Book of Leviticus. It was fascinating to me and I saw, as always, of course, that God was way ahead of everybody on what constitutes a good diet. He greatly blessed His people, the new emerging nation of the Hebrews, with this great knowledge. He explained that diseases arise primarily from what we eat or do not eat. I later came to understand much more about the immune system and how it is mandatory to keep one’s immune system strong and healthy because it is how we fight off disease and ill health. Bad food compromises it. It is the same with spiritual things. Bad spiritual teachings that oppose the teachings of the Lord cause bad spiritual health and keeps one blind to the greater truths of God’s Word which are necessary for excellent spiritual health.

Regarding the specifics about “whatever divides a hoof, thus making split hoofs” (Leviticus 11:3; see also Deuteronomy 14:6), the Lord is quite clear. These animals actually have two hooves on each foot (two toes). The hoof is completely divided. As we see in Leviticus Chapter 11 and Deuteronomy Chapter 14, in order to pass as clean food, the animal must also chew the cud. These animals are known as ruminants in that they eat relatively rapidly while they can and the food is available (storing it) and then bring the food up again for further chewing. They have four-part stomachs which significantly aid in digesting their food (all plant food, mostly grasses) in order to gain the full nutrients thereof. Specifically, as also mentioned in the Bible, such ruminants are listed as follows (this is not an exhaustive list):

These are the animals which you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep. [Deuteronomy 14:4-5]

All of these have both divided hooves and chew the cud. One can also list buffalo and even giraffes, which became officially kosher in 2008. On the other hand, one of the animals that has been a relative staple of American diets for centuries is the pig, though it is likely the most unclean of all unclean animals. The Word of God refers to pigs and others in the “do not eat!” class as detestable. It is ironic that in the traditionally Christian country of America pork has pretty much always been accepted as “good” though it is the exact opposite. Pigs, etc. are filthy animals. It should be obvious. They have always been accepted by the majority, however, mainly because they’re relatively cheap, breed fast, and will eat anything. All of these should have been a knock off that such animals should never be consumed. But long-held tradition often wins out. Also, since I grew up a deer hunter, I learned about deer processing lockers at a young age and also the making of deer sausage. It is often the case that, because deer meat has next to no fat, pork would be added to the deer sausage, often on a 50-50 basis, to add “moisture” and “flavor” to the sausage, thus essentially unwisely ruining what was otherwise good healthy meat. Of such is how tradition and desire overcomes knowledge and wisdom. It is exactly the same in many churches and denominations.

Concerning your question about what divided hooves and chewing cuds mean in a spiritual sense, it is not hard to understand and reveals how God has given many interesting clues that work like parables. Briefly, when one becomes a real Christian he or she becomes separated from the world which means one must live in both this fallen world (in it but not of it) and in the Lord’s kingdom simultaneously but one only lives for the Lord. We are to separate ourselves for Him. Also, one must not only read and know God’s Word superficially but also deeply, and the latter requires much ongoing study and meditation. Remember, the Word of God is God. The Lord Jesus is the Living Word. A Christian must therefore never stop at knowing His written Word in merely an academic sense but ponder it deeply and continue seeking out the deeper and greater knowledge within it. It is actually getting to know the Lord Jesus on an ever-closer relational level.

Thanks again for a great comment, Sandra. Blessings to you
