THE PURITY AND PERFECTION OF THE BRIDE OF CHRIST [Part 2]

In Part 1 we learned that the Lord’s perfect Bride must be comprised of perfect people and that this “perfection” is defined as being fully spiritually mature.

.

THE PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS [MATTHEW 25]

This is a story about hopeful brides-to-be. There is a bridegroom which means there will be a wedding. There will also be a wedding feast.  The Lord mentions ten hopeful young ladies who are already very well prepared because each are chaste virgins. This illustrates their purity.

Each of these young ladies has an oil lamp. In Scripture, oil represents spiritual anointing. Also, the oil lamps allow for light which represents the Light of the Lord which every believer must possess in order to access and remain on the spiritual path and travel it properly. Yet the lamps are no good without oil. In the Book of Acts, the early believers were filled with the Holy Spirit. After one’s glorious initial infilling there had to be additional refreshings of the Spirit of God at ongoing intervals to remain strong and effective in and for the Lord.

Now, though each of the ten virgins had the required oil lamp, only five of them were prudent enough to consider possible future implications and made the wise decision to bring additional oil in flasks. For the sake of the story, the additional oil they brought would not only be necessary but sufficient. This indicates that the Lord’s people must be ever prudent and always allow for additional oil as required throughout their lives. Sure enough, as it happened, the bridegroom was delayed. Instead of arriving at the expected customary hour he would not arrive until later on in the middle of the night. While waiting the ten young ladies grew drowsy and then fell asleep.

We know what happens next. There was suddenly a shout: “Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.” Upon waking up amid all the hurried excitement the foolish virgins saw that their lamps were running very low on oil and were about to fail! “Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.” “No, there will not be enough for us and you too.” “Sorry!” They had no choice but to rush off to the oil dealer.

Though well-prepared in spiritual purity they were ill-prepared in spiritual maturity.

While the foolish virgins were gone the prudent virgins finished trimming their lamps and began using the additional oil in their flasks. The long delay outside the wedding venue was finally over. The five wise virgins were overjoyed! The bridegroom! He is here! And those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast. It was the beginning of great celebration and joy.

And then the door was shut. There would be no further admittance.

The saddest part of this entire parable was what the bridegroom said when the foolish virgins returned and saw the closed door. They began fearfully calling out to the bridegroom to let them in. “Lord, lord, open up for us.” Remember, they had spent their entire young lives making the disciplined choices to remain pure and ready in preparation for this day. They had originally brought full oil lamps. They had done so many things right. Yet in the end it was all for naught.

“Truly I say to you, I do not know you.”

  1. This story has always compelled me to pray for others who may never have thought of the powerful importance of openly welcoming the Holy Spirit (or the implications of NOT doing so)…“Draw them, Holy Spirit, let not one be missing…” is my prayer. 🙏🏼 It is sobering from this parable to learn that the Lord doesn’t favour one-sided relationships and that He surely requires some investment from each one of us, some earnest longing, wisdom and effort, some deep desire within us to make certain we have sought out on our own, and fully treasured the gift of the precious oil of His Spirit.

    • Thank you Susan. Very good. I appreciate and value your comment.

Of course, the Lord requires EVERYTHING. I believe He does this because it is exactly as you said, that He doesn’t favor one-sided relationships. It is also because a real relationship with the Lord is impossible otherwise. He expects, and very rightly so, that whoever would be His real follower (His child) must give everything because HE gave everything and that HE IS WORTHY OF EVERYTHING. He is the Lord God, the Creator of all. He is also the pure and perfect Lamb of God who gave Himself in total and became the Sacrifice Lamb on our behalf. Whoever does not understand this or honor the Lord Jesus for it is simply not worthy of a real relationship with Him or of salvation or to be included in the Bride. Also, it is impossible for any person to get cleaned up enough and prepared enough without utilizing His means for doing so or without His direct involvement, so why should He waste His time on those who are not really serious and dedicated? It all starts with faith in Him. By giving oneself to Him in total with one’s entire heart it indicates true love and real trust. By “making the big jump and never looking back” one enables Him to begin the process of development toward becoming a spiritually mature disciple.

Salvation is a gift and can never be earned. Righteousness is also a gift. Everything He makes available is a gift. HE IS THE GREATEST GIFT. The Lord of Light is in it for eternity. The foolish virgins did not understand that but the prudent virgins certainly did. May all be the beneficiary of your prayer.

      • TY, RJ, yes, His gift and His unconditional love and grace are beyond amazing — so wonderful and profoundly beautiful and freeing in every way! ✝️♥️👑

And YES!! God means business in this divine love relationship , He’s truly in this for FOREVER!!

This parable sure always leaves me with much more food for thought. 🤔 I have sometimes wondered if the foolish ones in the story are intended to warn us as Christ followers and believers to be very careful not to fashion ourselves to look like we are carriers of His Light, (focus on outward appearances) yet inwardly are spiritually lazy, lukewarm, and lacking a true watchman-like faith, zeal, prayerfulness, and Kingdom readiness. Any one of us at any time could easily let life lead us along into such careless ways of thinking, e.g. “…well, I have lots of time, I have a faith, my religious upbringing, etc., so what’s the big deal, what will people think, I mean I can always decide to get into more of God’s light, power, and wisdom later, right?” This type of a casual attitude towards being His “lightbearers” might have been the error that rendered the foolish ones so foolish. Perhaps they were taking Him for granted in their hearts or taking advantage of God’s amazing love and grace by simply choosing a “form of godliness”, while denying His Spirit’s fullest power, (2 Timothy 3:5-7) and thereby living in a way that didn’t not seek to put God first.

“…But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)

“…for it is by grace we are saved through faith and this not of ourselves but as His gift. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

  3. Thanks for this reminder, RJ. You know, when I was little, in Sunday school we used to sing “Give me oil in my lamp.” I had no idea whatsoever as to the meaning of that little song. No one ever explained it. How sad that we teach little kids a song but do not teach them what it means.

    • Thanks. I appreciate it. The same can also be said for the majority of “churches” and Christian ministers who continually reveal themselves to those with eyes to see as foolish virgins with empty lamps. The evidence for this is all around us in America. The current Great Awakening continues to reveal more and more. All praise to the Lord for making Himself available to be found for all true searchers.

      Wise men still seek Him.
