The Name of God: The Name Above Every Name (Part 9)

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” [John 14:26]

According to the above passage, the Father… will send the Holy Spirit… in the Name of the Son. In classic Christian jargon, the “First Person” will send the “Third Person” in the name of the “Second Person.” This reminds me of the Olympics, when the three medal winners stand on small joined platforms of three different levels to receive their medals. The winner stands front and center on the tallest platform to receive the gold. He or she is the champion. The silver medal winner (second place) is on the second-tallest platform, and the third-place bronze medal winner is on the lowest platform.

Don’t we always say, “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?” (One, two, three?) We never arrange these three in any different order. The arrangement signifies rank, as if “The Father” is most important, “The Son” second most important, etc. But the tri-unity doctrine teaches that each Person is co-equal, which means it contradicts both itself AND Scripture:

If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.” [John 14:28b]

But Jesus is God! What’s up with that? Can God be greater than God?

Well, at least we know that the Father is greater than the Son, and is therefore most qualified to send the Holy Spirit.

         Uh… no:

“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.” [John 15:26-27]

         What?

One chapter after finding out that the Father will send the Spirit, we discover that Jesus will send the Spirit. Which is correct? Will the “First Person” send the “Third Person,” or will the “Second Person” send the “Third Person?” At least we know the “Third Person” wins the bronze. No apparent argument there.

So, the Holy Spirit will be sent in the Name of Jesus by Jesus. Confused?

Well, hold on, because we’re just getting started.

Just who, pray tell, is the Holy Spirit? Is it a heavenly dove? A nameless force? Was the Lord sent to the desert by a Spirit with no name because it felt good to be out of the rain? (In the desert, you can’t remember your name…)

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” [John 14:16-18]

         Uh oh.

We just found out who the Holy Spirit is. Why, despite theologian’s best efforts, do we keep coming back to Jesus? The Holy Spirit is the Paraclete, from the Greek word parakletos. This word is also translated in various Bible versions as Comforter, Helper, and Advocate. The Holy Spirit is assumed to take the place of Jesus in the lives of the disciples, but the truth is more than what it seems:

“You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’” [John 14:28a]

This is not a reference to the Second Coming. It is a reference to the fact that the Lord Jesus, as a Father, would not irresponsibly leave His children without a teacher, guide, or guardian once He ascended into heaven:

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” [John 14:18]

We gain more insight through the Lord referring to the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth. Can the Spirit of Truth be appreciably different from “The Truth?”

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” [John 14:6]

Is the Holy Spirit truly the Spirit of Jesus?

We get a glimpse of this and greater revelation in the following passage referencing Paul’s travels as he and his companions in ministry were directed by the Spirit of Jesus:

They passed through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia; and after they came to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them; and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. [Acts 16:6-8]

(There was, of course, a reason why the Lord refused to permit them to go into Bithynia, which will be studied in a later post.)

We receive further understanding of our subject through Paul’s claim that the Spirit of Jesus actually lives within real Christians and is spoken of as a providential provision:

…For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. [Philippians 1:19-21] [1]

He will not leave us as orphans indeed…

  1. Reblogged this on Real Christianity and commented:

It keeps getting better folks. And despite the best attempts of heartless theologians, the Word of God keeps guiding us closer to the Living Word, our Lord Jesus, who is God manifest in flesh, and dwells with us by His Holy Spirit…

  2. Someone once told me that the Holy Spirit is uniquely different from the Spirit of Jesus as illustrated in this verse: “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.” Romans 8:11

I would like to know your thoughts on this, as I would also like to reconcile this with the thought that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus, as also illustrated in the verses you quote. Thank you so much.

    • Thanks a lot for the comment. This is a fascinating subject and I appreciate your input.

First, I would like to state that there are many verses of Scripture stating very clearly that God raised Jesus from the dead, especially in the Book of Acts. There is no doubt about this. The first one listed in Acts states:

“But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.” [Acts 2:24]

But we also have the following:

The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?”

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” [John 2:18-19]

So who was it that raised Jesus from the dead? Was it God or did He do it Himself? These are the kind of questions that keep appearing throughout Scripture. The mind cannot fully grasp the concept the way the heart can, and it is by and through our hearts that we know God, and know Him better.

Also, the Bible states there is One Spirit…

      • Thank you, I am content and persuaded to embrace the mystery of the truth with my heart, in the very same way that I embrace the truth that there are Three Persons in One God, and as you say that the Bible states that there is One Spirit.

  3. Thanks again, my friend. Might we possibly agree that God has chosen to reveal Himself in three principle ways, that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three principle manifestations of the One God?

  4. A friend of mine was so excited a few weeks back that she posted this comment: “Have you all heard? The third temple is being built now.” I remember reading something about this, that when the 3rd gets built it means the coming of Jesus is close. I tried looking up any information on this but could not find anything that says it is really being rebuilt as of today but I am hopeful that you know more about this subject and what this would mean. I am not sure when the second one was built.

    Thank you RJ

    • Thanks Sandra. Actually, the so-called third temple is not being built but Zionists have been preparing for it for many years. Before I comment further on that issue I want to answer your question regarding the Israelite temple history. I am going to try to keep this brief because it is a very detailed story. Suffice it to say that God was not originally in favor of any temple being built and states this clearly in Scripture. For example, in the following passage Stephen tells the truth of the matter and quotes Isaiah the prophet (Isaiah 66:1) to prove it:

“David found favor in God’s sight, and asked that he might find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob. But it was Solomon who built a house for Him. However, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands; as the prophet says:
      ‘Heaven is My throne,
      And earth is the footstool of My feet;
What kind of house will you build for Me?’ says the Lord,
‘Or what place is there for My repose?
‘Was it not My hand which made all these things?’”
      [Acts 7:46-50]

The apostle Paul agrees with this and states the following:

The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; [Acts 17:24-25]

I delve into this topic in my book Real Christianity in which I reveal the truth of the matter through much research and Scripture. Several years ago, my research and writing was confirmed by every student of a Christian college class given the task of writing papers for grade. My book was assigned reading. Suffice it to say that the accurate OT Biblical prophecy of a temple being built was misunderstood and misapplied by Solomon and this incorrect rendering was later adopted by much of Christianity.

However, God never actually said that Solomon would build the temple in question but another one of David’s descendants far into the future. That other one is the Lord Jesus. The prophecy was pointing directly at Him. In reality, since the first century AD, the Lord certainly has been building a temple but a different kind of temple—a spiritual temple. And rather than building with lifeless stone blocks it is composed of Himself as the chief Cornerstone and of His followers, as Paul wrote here:

For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” [2Corinthians 6:16] (Quoting Jeremiah 31:33)

      Paul also wrote:

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit. [Ephesians 2:19-22]

You may ask then, what about the Israelite temples built and utilized in the past? The answer to that is found in the construction of the original tabernacle of God built initially in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt. This tabernacle made of animal skins was actually a mobile tent continually constructed and deconstructed and moved from place to place during the forty year wandering of the Israelites (1446-1406BC). It contained the Ark of the Covenant and other furnishings. It was also carried into the Promised Land and was set up in various locations there over time.

According to 1Chronicles 16:39, the mobile tabernacle existed from then all the way to the time of David four centuries later when it at that time was located in Gibeon. David was the second king (after Saul) and reigned from 1010 to 970BC. You may recall the account when King David brought the Ark into Jerusalem for the first time when he danced before the Lord. Scripture is not clear on how much of the original tent and its furnishings remained at that time but it appears that it was not fully intact having obviously aged and was possibly missing some components.

The point here is that the original tabernacle was constructed as it was and meant to be mobile because it represented the place of God’s dwelling. King Solomon (David’s son and the third king) had incorrectly decided to make a static permanent temple of worked stone designed and built by non-Israelites in the manner of pagan temples. It must be assumed that God allowed this because of the condition of the people’s hearts just as He allowed there to be Israelite kings when He was their actual and only King though rejected by them.

Solomon supervised the building of the first Temple from 966-958BC. This original temple lasted until 586BC when it was completely destroyed by the Babylonians at the outset of the Babylonian Captivity. Afterwards a second replacement temple was built from 521-516BC but this one was of lesser quality. It apparently lasted for five full centuries, however. In about 19BC King Herod began building the third Temple. He had to be very careful though because the existing old temple was considered greatly sacrosanct. However, the fact is that he actually had to deconstruct the Second Temple and then build a completely new Temple—the third one. It was an edifice of extremely high quality and likely much better even than the original of Solomon. Nevertheless, the rulers and priests insisted it was only a remodeling job and also insisted it must continue to be referred to as the Second Temple. This magnificent temple did not last very long, however, as it was destroyed by God’s Judgment in 70AD as per the Lord’s prophecy of almost forty years before:

And while some were talking about the temple, that it was adorned with beautiful stones and votive gifts, He said, “As for these things which you are looking at, the days will come in which there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be torn down.” [Luke 21:5-6]

According to the Lord Jesus that was end of Israelite temples forever. There was no longer any need for one after He gave His life to become the only and final sacrifice for all sin. The previous temples were based on a sacrificial system killing animals as a type of substitution but to also foreshadow the Lord’s death. Whoever then advocates for a new temple gets it wrong by calling it a third temple because it would actually be the fourth. Such people are also egregiously violating the New Testament writings and the Lord’s teachings. The Lord never said we would know of His second coming by the building of a new stone temple.

Nevertheless, an entire industry has sprung up over the last few decades advocating for and demanding a new “third” temple. The main holdup is that the place they want to build it—the so-called “Temple Mount” in Jerusalem—is currently occupied by two centuries-old Muslim mosques one of which is especially highly, highly revered and protected and provokes extremely high emotion by Muslims worldwide. Yet, ironically, the original temples were never actually located on this “Temple Mount” which adds yet another very strange aspect to the “third temple” agenda.

Regardless of such, however, the determined temple advocates will likely eventually set off WWIII by taking the site and this could happen relatively soon. They also believe erroneously that they are doing God’s will and fulfilling prophecy. They simply either do not know the truth of the New Covenant writings and teachings of the Lord Jesus, which includes the errant Zionist Christians involved in this effort, or they don’t care.

We would all be wise to understand and acknowledge the powerful truthful words of Stephen right before they killed him. Not only did he refute the idea of God dwelling in stone temples built by mere men, he also gives us a powerful clue about those advocating for such. I encourage you to read the entire passage of Stephen, his last words, to gain an excellent understanding of this topic. The passage is found in Acts 6:8-7:60.

      Blessings

  5. Thank you RJ, this confirms what I was thinking. Like a parable, it is not an actual temple, but a spiritual temple. It is almost like people want to keep worshipping things, things they can see and touch. Like all the giant fancy churches in the world. Or, like the wailing wall. They say it is what’s left of the second temple. A place they can go and pray. We can pray anywhere. But maybe they feel they are closer to God being at these places. Isn’t that similar to the high priest wanting to be seen praying in public, when Jesus says to pray in private. Thank you for explaining this. I knew somewhat of the temples, but did not understand her excitement about another one being built. I will read Acts next. Thank you again.

    • Thank you Sandra. You have expressed with this comment the truth of the matter. The Lord made it very clear that His kingdom is a spiritual kingdom. At its very essence it is a kingdom of the heart and it is the heart of the individual with which He was and still is most concerned. It is why He is easier to find and talk to and receive from away from the things of man—in quiet places and out in nature—in the natural world—in the off the beaten paths away from the hustle of life.

We live in a fallen world. It is a broken world broken away from its Creator. Sinful rebellious mankind has its world, that which the NT Greek refers to as the cosmos. It is a world built primarily not by the Lord but often by those who oppose Him and do not honor Him. Because it is not spiritual it must be material. People by and large are more comfortable with “worshiping things, things they can see and touch.” But these things never satisfy on a spiritual level. It is why some leave that world in search of truth and reality. Those with such a hunger will be led eventually to the very source as long as they keep on going down that road.

At the end is the Creator, our Father, who came to this world as our Lord and Savior. It is He and His love that such searchers seek for though He is never so far away.

I want to thank you again, Sandra, for your support and your great comments. They have been a blessing to me. You have asked for and allowed me to do what I love in fulfilling my purpose. You have now completed this 10-Part series. I hope you are now farther down the road.

I greatly appreciate your site and all the wonderful photography and tales of your adventures. Y’all are blessed and are making your blessing a blessing to many others. Thanks for being a great friend. Onward

  6. Yes, onward. I will keep reading your older pieces of work for as long as they are available to read. I learn so much from them, and the comments from others attached to each one. We never stop learning, we should never stop seeking and asking questions. I have more questions than answers and will keep asking them of you for as long as you are able to respond. I truly appreciate it. I understand now why I seek solitude, not to hide from the world, but to be closer to our Father. 🙂
