EARLY CHURCH HISTORY 101 (Lesson 3)
In the first century AD, the Israelites continued to be obsessed with the restoration of their kingdom. Other than brief independence under the Hasmonean Dynasty (c142-37 BC), they had been ruled by foreign powers since the Babylonian Captivity six centuries before.

INTRODUCTION LESSON 1 LESSON 2
LESSON 3
ACTS 1:6-8
6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
The Lord continued attempting to patiently explain to his disciples that His was a spiritual kingdom. In His Olivet Prophecy, as recorded in Matthew 24 and 25, Mark 13, and Luke 21, He warned them that great tribulation was coming and what was left of the nation of Israel would cease to exist within a generation.
Then He shifted His answer to the immediate future when they would be endowed with a power giving them greater ability to understand. He told them they would become dynamic witnesses of the Gospel message. The Greek word is dunamis and is defined as “strength, ability, inherent power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature, or which a person or thing exerts and puts forth.” This would be an entirely different ballgame. The powerful OT prophets and John the Baptist had the spiritual power of God upon them, but they were not indwelt by the Spirit of the Lord. In fact, the Lord said:
11 “Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” [Matthew 11:11]
How is this possible? John was obviously a great and fearless preacher, the forerunner of the Lord. He had what would otherwise be an impossible objective—to prepare the collective heart of the nation for a soon arriving future. For many, if not most, it would be a future of growing tribulation and destruction. The independence and freedom sought by the Israelites would continually diminish just as John had prophesied:
7 So he began saying to the crowds who were going out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 “Therefore bear fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham. 9 “Indeed the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; so every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” [Luke 3:7-9] [1]
A smaller percentage of the people did repent, though not enough to save the nation, and it was the Community of this repentant Remnant composed entirely of Israelites that the Lord initially gathered as a spiritual people for a spiritual kingdom. For this, they would have to be like Him and receive His power. They must each be filled with the Holy Spirit.

I finally thought of checking for your posts on the Reader. I can’t access your website at all. Have you taken it down or changed the title somehow?
Anyway. I really enjoyed this particular post. The excitement of those days in Jerusalem among the believing Jews must have been an amazing thing to see! Looking forward to the next installments 🙂

Thank you Linda. I greatly appreciate you continuing to read and enjoy my posts. I do hope they remain edifying. Regarding site availability, I could no longer afford to keep the next level WordPress upgrade which I have had for many years now. It had eliminated ads which made my site better for my readers. It also had allowed me to use my main domain name of rjdawson.com. Because I couldn’t make the payment in time to keep my annual upgrade, WordPress disallowed my site from being accessed under that domain name.
After reading your comment and doing some checking I discovered that WordPress reverted my site back to “free” status using the domain name https://getrealchristianity.wordpress.com. I just attempted to access my site at this address and it worked. The page that appears is my latest new article which was posted on February 2, 2024. Please don’t read this yet. Scroll down past it and save it for last.
In order to access my Early Church History articles, you will have to scroll down. You have already read Lessons Intro to Lesson 3. I would be most appreciative if you could read Lessons 4-6 as soon as possible. I then ask that you would read my latest post of February 2. I say this because I value your opinion and appreciate your long-term readership.
I also discovered that my posts are appearing in the reader but only at the latter address. I would like to revert back to my upgrade plan but am not sure it would be worth it. My readership and traffic have dwindled although I did my best to keep this from happening. I had a difficult 2023 with much to overcome and am still trying to get back. If I knew my readers still wanted and valued my work I would be more than willing to continue but as it stands you are the only one who has noticed my site situation and told me about it. No one else has expressed any interest about my status.
The problem for me is that I still have much to say and teach, want to stay involved, want to continue to write, and want to stay in contact with my readers but will need help. Also, I am now dealing with a disability that keeps me from working at my ministry to the degree I used to.
Thanks for your continued attention Linda and for your prayers. Blessings

Thank you so much Linda. I really felt your prayers on Wednesday especially. Yesterday was a challenge but I got up very early today to pray and then later began addressing all your comments. Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to read and comment. Thanks for saving the new website address. You may be my only reader aware of it. Be greatly blessed today. I’m praying for y’all also.

Your prayers are also deeply appreciated. I’ve had a rough week on several levels, and I sense the lurking shadow of depression. Because I spent 18 years as a therapist, I am quite familiar with the early symptoms. When I do, I go to the Rock of my salvation, the Stone that the builders rejected. He is my strength and my fortress.

AMEN. I think a big part of this is spiritual warfare. Paul touched on this a few times and even mentioned despair. It is always a challenge to live as strong overcoming Christians though we usually keep the victory through the Lord’s strength. But sometimes the battle gets rough. We will continue to pray for each other and others also to stay in victory and carry on. We have much work to do and will do our best regardless of circumstances. I have recently experienced some new victories and blessings, though currently small, that are starting to come forth. There is future fruit on the vine. Blessings to you

I’m so sorry, RJ, for the difficulties you’ve been experiencing.
I have never made the much-pushed upgrade with WordPress. They pestered me with it for a couple of months, but I’m not going to spend money on something I’m not doing in order to make money. The basic plan has worked well for me, with a slow-growing readership. I’m ok with that. It’s growth, right?
I will follow your requests, and will also change my subscription to your present site instead of the one I’ve used all these years.
Praying for you. You have so much to offer, and Satan doesn’t like it. His attacks are clear, in my opinion, and he knows you have the truth. He hates truth. I am praying for you, and for whatever your physical disability may be that is slowing you down. God knows.
I had breakfast this morning with a friend who asked me about the sovereignty of God. She wondered, if He is sovereign, why we still have troubles and trials. As we talked, I asked her why anyone would want to worship a God Who is NOT above all gods, above all powers; Who is subject to some other greater power than Himself. Of course we have troubles and trials, because we were born with a nature to sin, and with the free will to decide to do so. God does not want a “love” that is not voluntarily given to Him. It was a good conversation, and I couldn’t help but be thankful for such a great God, full of love and mercy toward us, and longsuffering with our obstinate determination to somehow prove Him wrong! How foolish we are!
Well. Please forgive my rambling. I know you understand, and can identify with this sort of conversation. Satan loves to confuse us, often using the Bible itself to do so. I want to help kick him into the Lake of Fire someday! Not that God needs help. Just my nasty desire to see him get what he has coming to him 🙂

Thanks Linda. I appreciate your concern and encouragement. The Lord has sustained me throughout this time and as of late there has been improvement in the overall situation. I know this improvement will continue building but there is always opposition in the fight of good over evil and truth over error. I still have the fire. I still want to excel and the Lord will find a way. It’s all for His glory anyway and not our own. I greatly appreciate your prayers. I have confidence in your prayers. Yet though our prayers are vitally necessary, it is always the Lord who does the work of answering them. All glory and praise to Him. Let us all continue to strive for His will which is always the best possible outcome. Thank you for reading! May the Lord continue to bless you and Terry abundantly and your family and friends. Again, congratulations on your recent twelve year blogging anniversary—a great achievement! To the Lord be the glory.
